Zakat is a sacred obligation in Islam, meant to support those in need.
However, questions may arise regarding its validity if it is given to someone who does not qualify as a recipient.
Here’s what you need to know:
If you genuinely tried to determine the recipient’s eligibility and later discovered they were not qualified, your Zakat is still valid. Your intention and effort in verifying their status are taken into account.
Islam acknowledges that mistakes can happen despite one’s best efforts. As long as you acted in good faith, your duty is considered fulfilled.
While unintentional errors are excused, it is always encouraged to be thorough in assessing a recipient’s eligibility.
If Zakat is knowingly given to someone who does not meet the criteria, it does not fulfill the obligation. In this case, you would need to repay the Zakat correctly.
Zakat should be given to the eight eligible categories mentioned in the Quran, including the poor, the needy, and those in debt. It can also be used to help free captives who require financial assistance for their release.
May Allah accept our sincere efforts in fulfilling this important pillar of Islam.
And Allah knows best!
