Should I Pay Zakat on Outstanding Payments Owed by a Client?

The question of whether you should pay Zakat on outstanding payments owed by a client is common in financial matters.

Here’s a breakdown of the key points to consider:

  • Zakatable wealth: Zakat is only due on wealth that you currently possess and can access.
  • Outstanding payments: Money owed to you by a client, for services rendered or products provided, is not considered Zakatable until it is received.
  • Scholarly consensus: According to many scholars, money that is owed but not yet in your hands does not require Zakat. It is not part of your wealth until you collect it.
  • When Zakat is due: Once you receive the payment from the client, it becomes part of your total wealth. Zakat will then be due on it if it remains in your possession for a full lunar year (hawl).
  • Clarification: The debt owed to you is not considered your money until it is paid, so you are not required to pay Zakat on it until you receive it.

Thus, you do not need to pay Zakat on money owed to you by a client until it is collected. After you receive the payment, it becomes Zakatable if it stays in your possession for a year.

And Allah knows best!
